This is the third livejournal I've had to quit. It has done more than it's fair share of damage now. I think it's time to take my crap elsewhere |

You know, I really really love Red Krayola and I'm very excited about their new album which i have just found on soulseek and will try and download now. Their first album was released 40 years ago. That's scary. This band are the stuff of indie legends.
I have decided that I need the new Scott Walker album too
and I'm going to give Eagles Of Death Metal's new album a listen |

Jesu - silver
Wow. I must admit I was hardly blown away by Jesu's self titled album or the EP that came before it and when I saw them live supporting Isis they were one of the dullest bands I've ever seen. But, if they had played this EP I would've loved them. These four songs are not only the most accessible songs Justin has maybe ever written, but they are considerably more upbeat than anything else in the Jesu discography. Very strong shoegaze influence on this EP but in amongst the swirling guitar and vocals there's still the crushing desolate sound that was prominent on Jesu's album (think Ride jamming with Pelican.) It's not as huge sounding as the works of Jesu's peers Isis and Pelican, but it's definitely a lot more enjoyable!
I highly recommend this.
You can download somewhere online for free, hold on I'll find the link

"Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me, Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been."
Aint never been nothing wrong with the Grateful Dead
Nothing
So yeah our fridge hasn't been fixed yet. Our landlord says it's cheaper to just buy a new one, but until that gets delivered we have no way of refridgerating any food. All the frozen meat and fish had to be cooked yesterday and the milk and yoghurt had to be thrown out before we all died from salmonela or something like that. It's gross and inconvenient.
My lecture was cancelled today because Stan was ill. He lives in Cellardyke which is where that swan was found so he might be the first person in Britain to have bird flu. Probably not.
It's another lovely sunny day but for some reason I'm not feeling it. I'm really bored and grumpy. And as much as I adore Queens Of The Stone Age and the Grateful Dead there's only so much they can do. |

So,
- our fridge freezer is broken, so all the milk is going off and the frozen food is defrosting - my shoes are really falling apart so there's a bit of rubber at the heel which is painfully digging into the back of my foot whenever I walk - the film I watched in anthropology today was utter crap - the lecturers strike is still going on, which means that even though we still get lectures and deadlines no work is being marked and the exams might not take place till June and we might not graduate until August - I don't have any money - I don't have much food - I'm very lonely and have close to zero social life - I haven't had a good nights sleep in what feels like months - the washing machine is leaking again - the lock on the bathroom door is broken - the temperature control of the shower is being temperamental so it seems to only be hot or excrutiatingly hot - the showerhead itself is broken so it's currently being held at a decent height with a bloc of blu-tack which could fall off at any moment ...and many more
but you know what? I couldn't care less :-) I'm perfectly content to just sit and rock out to Mudhoney. It's a lovely sunny day, not too warm and not windy. I had a nice walk along the beach with my friend Sophie and had a good time chatting to her and watching all the dogs playing in the sand. I've finished my dissertation (even though it might not get marked for several months) and I have a good two weeks before I need to start working on essays and exam revision. And I don't have a lecture on Wednesday so I'll disappear out of town for the day. Hmm. Rock on I guess. |

Me: "Hey man, if you get permanent marker on your skin, it washes off right?" David: "Eventually" Me: "Ah ok" David: "Why what did you do?" Me: "Umm. I was bored so I started drawing random stuff on my arm without realising I was using a permanent marker" David: "Silly boy. But yeah it should wash off in a day or two" Me: "Ok. Kinda dissappointed actually. It looks sweet. Might go and get it tattooed" David: "Your call dude" |

6 years in the making. Continuously pushed back or cancelled or postponed or put off completely. Featuring guest stars ranging from Massive Attack and Nora Jones to Kool Keith, Dan The Automator and Rahzel.
Peeping Tom is yet another idea from, as amazon.com says, "noise rock renaissance man" Mike Patton. This is his warped idea of accessible pop music, with a very prominent hip-hop and r'n'b feel to the music (as can be seen from the vast array of guest performers). And you know what, I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this is the best album Patton has been involved with since his days with Faith No More. It's just spectacular. It's so surprising to hear him return to this radio-friendly music, and this is without a doubt the most accessible album he's ever made. Even though it's been 6 years in the making and hyped to ridiculous standards by many of Patton's followers, the album really does just blow me away. It'll take something very special to be a better album of 2006 (Tool, I'm looking at you). |

Title: "The Anthropology of Punk Rock: Music, Style and Identity in a prominent subculture"
Status: Complete!!
Length: 8,644 words
Definition: Awesome
oh yes, it is complete. Thank fuck for that. I am utterly exhausted, mentally and physically. And I've been running about for the past 3 hours sorting it out: buying print credits, printing it (2 copies, altogether 76 pages!!), getting it bound (£8, and I had to walk to the outskirts of town in the pouring rain, officially our first April shower, got absolutely soaked), and finally handing it in.
Damn. I need sleep |

Harraj Mann from Hartlepool was pulled off a London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport on March 30. He was questioned under the Terrorism Act after it's believed his choice of music made a taxi driver suspicious.
Mann was able to play his own music through the cab's stereo on the way to his flight, but it seems the driver did not approve.
"I played Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' first, which the taxi man liked," Mann explained. "I figured he liked the classics, so I put on Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song'. Then, since I was going to London, I played The Clash ('London Calling') and finished up with 'Nowhere Man' by The Beatles. He didn't like Led Zeppelin or The Clash, but I don't think there was any need to tell the police."
It seems The Clash's lyrics which include "War is declared and battle come down", alarmed the cabbie who alerted police, while Led Zeppelin's line about "The hammer of the gods will rive our ship to new lands, to fight the horde", probably didn't help either.
Durham Police then acted on "information received" but admitted "by the time it was established the man did not pose a security risk, the plane had taken off", The Mirror reports.
Mann, however, said he saw the funny side of the incident, telling his local newspaper the Hartlepool Mail: "I was laughing about it, but all my mates are absolutely furious. It's just left me bemused. I can agree that there's a culture of fear. They acted on the information they had. I'm just frustrated that it happened to me. It's a mystery."
Excuse me one monent while I RUPTURE MY SPLEEN WITH LAUGHTER!! That's insane!! That taxi driver was clearly a seriously confused individual. My god, what a country/world. The society of fear indeed |

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this book is life-changing and has instantly become one of my favourite books of all time. Which is very very strange for me to be saying about a work of non-fiction. Even if you have no idea about the 80s American indie or punk scene, even if you've never heard of Big Black or the Minutemen or Beat Happening, or even if you already know everything about them, it doesn't matter, this book is so well written and so informative that all 13 band profiles are addictively readable.
And it just so happens that 12 of the 13 bands can be considered my favourite bands ever. If they'd replaced Beat Happening with the Melvins, this would be my bible.
Black Flag The Minutemen Mission Of Burma Minor Threat Husker Du The Replacements Sonic Youth Butthole Surfers Big Black Dinosaur Jr Fugazi Mudhoney Beat Happening
The best stories are those of the Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr and the utterly hilarious Butthole Surfers.
Incredible book.
and thus begins a new life for Rory |

It's not the end of the world Since your baby left you It's gonna be okay You don't need her anyway
You're looking around for someone to love So you don't have to face the world alone But give it some time and you might find That you're better off on you own Cause you could be dead right now You could be the stupidest thing in the world But you're not, look at what you've got And stop thinking about that girl
You deserve the best, but it's up to you to get it don't settle for less, you know you're gonna regret it
It's not the end of the world Since your baby left you It's gonna be okay You don't need her anyway
Watching the rube, moping around Might as well be six feet underground You're watching the game go by Waiting for the final score You got the beer commercials memorized So you've probably heard this before But this ain't the TV talking to you It's a friend who's gonna tell you what you can do
You deserve the best, but it's up to you to get it don't settle for less, you're the best and don't you forget it
I know what you're thinking ... you'll never find another And even if you did, well, you couldn't love her But out there somewhere is the person, place or thing That you need to make you believe in you
It's not the end of the world Since your baby left you It's gonna be okay You can find something better anyway
Just take your time. and you will find What your life requires Just take your time. and you will find What your heart desires Just take your time. and you will find You will find
Thanks Milo. I needed to hear someone say that to me. And you came on my itunes and sang it right to me. Thank you. |

My mum went to a fortune teller type person. I think she was a tea leaf reader or something like that. Mainly because one of her friends goes regularly and is constantly surprised by what the woman can pick up. Here's a little excerpt from it -
"Hmm. I can see a university. Are you or is someone you know at university?" "Yes my son is" "Ok. He's not doing a very normal degree is he? Something a bit different?" "Yeah I guess that's true" "Sociology or anthropology or one of those?" "Anthropology" "Ok.... he found it a bit hard at first didn't he? Very stressed and so on?" "Yeah I guess you could say that" "But he's doing ok now. Well he was up until recently. Something has happened to him am I right?" "I don't know I haven't spoken to him in a while" "Well he's a bit worried but... is his birthday in June?" "No, May" "Huh. There's definitely something very important happening in June. Really really important, and it's going to be a big celebration and a very happy time for him and you" "He's graduating in June" "Ok that must be it. I can tell it's going to be a very happy time for him. You should be very happy. He's going to pass with a very high grade. He'll be surprised and you'll be very happy"
So there you go. Also apparently I should be getting between 7 and 9 thousand pounds in September. Which I will definitely need by then, regardless of how well my graduation goes. |

Speaking of which what chapter am I on now..... The Music Of Punk. Sweet. I have to stop myself from being really really geeky here. Keep it simple and then move on to The Scene.
